Yesterday we discussed Adam and Eve. The Garden that Adam and Eve walked in was very different from our backyard garden and very different from the state of this fallen world today. It is imperative for us to know that the Kingdom is not of this world. So the essence of prosperity is not about our well being in the flesh or in the natural realm. In fact, in order to gain in the Kingdom, we will have to learn to die unto our desires and lusts and learn to live in the Spirit. True prosperity in the Kingdom is our spiritual well being. (This is not to say that Prosperity can’t or shouldn’t have physical manifestations in this world, but that is not the essence).
Actually one Hebrew word -sakal -translated as prosperity has its root meaning as “wisdom or insight.” So to prosper is to gain insight and wisdom – more than merely material blessings. Wisdom and insight spring forth from understanding and obedience to the Law or the way of God.
There is a famous quote from Henry Ford when he was asked if he would kill himself as so many were doing during the financial crises because he had lost his fortune. He replied that that would be ridiculous because he knew how he created his fortune in the first place, and he therefore knew how to do it again. He understood that his fortune was in his wisdom, not in the money that he possessed.
The ancient Hebrews understood that prosperity comes from wisdom. Each son would receive the blessing from his father which would include all teaching and understanding as well as material wealth. Wisdom was held in high regard and as the most important thing to be passed down. The young would memorize the Word of God as it was passed down to them.
In perhaps the most famous example of prosperity stemming from wisdom, God granted Solomon any desire that he would have. Instead of asking for riches, Solomon asked for the wisdom to lead the people well. God was so impressed by this that He also granted all forms of blessing which included material wealth. (1 Kings 3)
Jesus taught the same things, “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)
